The Saltdean Lido, an iconic Grade II* listed building known for its Art Deco design and historical significance along the English coast, has undergone a comprehensive restoration. This project aimed to both preserve the architectural heritage of the Lido and enhance its role as a community resource.
The restoration process began in 2011 when the building, due to its architectural merit, had its status upgraded to Grade II*. The Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company (SLCIC), supported by community volunteers, successfully took over the lease in 2013, securing funding and planning approvals to restore the site.
The restoration of Saltdean Lido focused not only on preserving its historical significance but also on significantly improving the building’s energy efficiency.
Key upgrades included the installation of air-source heat pumps, photovoltaic cells, and reinforced insulation, all designed to reduce the building’s carbon footprint. Modern heating and cooling systems, such as VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume), were introduced, eliminating the need for gas-powered systems, while Bluetooth-controlled LED lighting was installed throughout the function spaces to optimise energy management.
These improvements have transformed Saltdean Lido into a highly sustainable building, all while honouring its iconic 1930s Art Deco character.
The project has been widely recognised, winning multiple awards, including the Sussex Heritage Trust ‘Public and Community’ Award, the Constructing Excellence SECBE Award for Regeneration and Retrofit, and the People’s Choice award.
These accolades celebrate the restoration which has transformed the Lido into a sustainable, multifunctional community space, earning praise for its careful balance of heritage preservation and contemporary innovation.
